The Salmon River is a very large and popular river in Upstate New York. The River is also an economically important sport fishing destination and the most heavily fished of New York's Lake Ontario tributaries. From its headwaters in the Tug Hill region of New York, it flows 44 miles (71 km) westward through two hydroelectric dams and over the 110-foot (34 m) Salmon River Falls before it empties into eastern Lake Ontario at Port Ontario in Oswego County. Multiple driftboat charters utilize the Marina as their launch site during the always exciting and fast-paced Salmon "Run", which can occur anytime from mid-August into late October or even early November.
The Salmon River Falls Unique Area encompasses 112 acres of land and the 110-foot (34 m) high Falls and 3000-foot long scenic gorge are the featured attractions of this breathtaking parcel of NY state land. Within the gorge there are sheer cliffs and steep slopes as high as 120 feet. The Area is located approximately 15 miles (25 minutes by car) from the Lighthouse, two miles southeast of Orwell, NY and one mile north of County Route 22 on Falls Road. It is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation; the DEC Region 7 Office may be contacted at 607-753-3095. The Falls and surrounding land area are open year-round to the public (from sunrise to sunset) for general recreation and are a popular sightseeing destination within the region. Admission is free.
Built in 1980, the Salmon River Fish Hatchery specializes in raising King (Chinook) and Coho salmon and Steelhead and Brown trout. The Hatchery was constructed to revive and enhance the Great Lakes fishery and now provides most of the fish for the multi-million-dollar Lake Ontario salmonid fishery. The Hatchery is located approximately 12 miles (20 minutes by car) east of the Lighthouse at 2133 County Route 22, Altmor, NY. It is open to the public each year from April 1st (weather-permitting) to November 30th, 8:30 am to 3:30 pm daily. The Hatchery may be contacted directly at 315-298-5051 and group tours may be scheduled in advance by calling 315-298-6705. Admission is free.
